AECP: Level 2 – Beautiful Details

Hi there!

My card today is for the Beautiful Details class as part of the Altenew Educator Certification Program – Level 2.

I love using my Copic markers and I’ve always felt that I could get some pretty great results just from blending the markers correctly – but I was completely SHOCKED at how much more depth and vibrancy I was able to get by adding in some details with colored pencils over the top of the markers! This class gave me a huge Aha!

Even though it was my very first time doing this technique, I think my card turned out pretty awesome! I absolutely love the yellows and oranges in the flower! I wish I had taken a picture of this card after I had completed the Copic coloring and before I added in the colored pencil – it is truly a huge difference! Don’t get me wrong – I still love the look of Copics by themselves – but adding in details with colored pencils is truly a great way to add in depth and color variation.  You can see a close up of the details in the photo below:

Instructions:
1. Stamp the large bloom on Copic Xpress It paper using the fadeout ink.
2. Stamp the foliage using Altenew Frayed Leaf ink.
3. Color the bloom with Copic Markers.
4. Add details to the bloom using Prismacolor pencils. Tip: Use light strokes! You can always apply more color but you can’t take color away so it is best to build up.
5. Add details to the foliage using Prismacolor pencils.
6. Die cut the bloom and foliage.
7. Create your arrangement, cover with Press-n-Seal to hold it together exactly as you arranged it, turn it over and glue the overlapping pieces together. Add foam adhesive.
8. Use the largest Outside In Stitched rectangle die to cut a panel.
9. Press the gold pigment ink onto a nonporous surface like a glass mat or acrylic block, add water, and use the ink-water mix to splatter the stitched panel. Let dry.
10. Stamp the sentiment onto the stitched panel.
11. Adhere the panel to the card front.
12. While it is still on the Press-n-Seal, determine the right placement for your flower/foliage arrangement on the card front, then remove the foam adhesive you added to the back and place your arrangement on your card front. Remove the Press-n-Seal and adhere any pieces that may be loose.

Note: I did not trim off the foliage that overhangs the card front  – mostly because I put so much work into adding the details it just felt wrong to cut any of it off. Because of the overhangs, I’ll need to use a larger envelope to mail this card – but you can certainly trim off any overhang you may have if you like.

I’m in love with this card and am still amazed at how added ingdetails with colored pencils really changed the look of this card!  I may have to keep it for myself!

All the best,

  1. Your card is absolutely stunning! If you share this technique again, I would love to see the before and after! I have not tried adding pencil detail before, but you have inspired me! Thank you! ❤❤

    1. Thank you, Kim! Honestly, when I started this card I did not think that adding the pencil details would make such a huge difference! I was thrilled to see what it could do! When I do this again I will definitely take a “before” picture! I hope you try it and find it as much of a revelation as I did!

  2. Thanks for listing out the supplies so clearly at the end. Especially, when you fall in love with a particular color, it’s so helpful!
